The municipality of Osterwald consists of the districts of Osterwald, Alte Piccardie and Höhenkörben. It is characterised by agriculture and oil production. The Coevorden-Piccardie Canal and the River Lee run through the municipality. The Hootmanns Meer nature reserve, which covers an area of around 30 hectares, is located in the municipality. The neighbouring municipalities are Neuenhaus, Esche, Georgsdorf, Hoogstede, Wietmarschen and Nordhorn.

Osterwald has a daycare centre with nursery and kindergarten places, which was newly built in 2013, a primary school, a sports hall and sports fields.

The village community centre at Hauptstraße 11 in Osterwald is the venue for numerous celebrations and events. You can find the costs for hiring it on the invoice.

The Farmers' Museum contains a collection of historical agricultural and household tools and machinery that give visitors an insight into life in the past. Many visitors stop off here. Bridal couples also like to choose this location for their wedding ceremony. The petroleum museum with exhibits, models and display boards can also be visited in the immediate neighbourhood.
