Press release from the Neuenhaus joint municipality

Resolution "Making strong municipalities possible"

On the recommendation of the Lower Saxony Association of Towns and Municipalities (DStGB), the joint municipality of Neuenhaus has joined "Making strong municipalities possible". Together with a comprehensive paper of demands, the resolution is aimed at federal politicians in the coming legislative period.

In particular, it addresses the topics of municipal finances, immigration, security, digitalisation, cutting red tape and education.

Joint municipality mayor Günter Oldekamp reiterates the statements and demands made in the resolution: "In our joint municipality of Neuenhaus, we are also feeling the consequences of numerous decisions at federal and state level that have to be borne without sufficient compensation. The exemption from contributions in child daycare, all-day care for primary school children and the Digital Pact I for schools are just three striking examples of areas in which the municipal side has to bear a heavy burden time and again."

What is needed now is a change of course so that we remain capable of acting and fit for the future. Especially in times of recurring and permanent crisis events, municipalities such as Neuenhaus are in demand as anchors of stability.

Background:

The German Association of Towns and Municipalities (DStGB), of which the NSGB is a member organisation, held a press conference at the beginning of 2025 to take stock and provide an outlook for German towns and municipalities. Part of this is the two-page resolution "Making strong municipalities possible" along with a comprehensive catalogue of functions for federal policy in the new legislative period from 2025 to 2029.
